Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
