Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
