No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
