Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
